We Won't Forget Their Selfless Sacrifices
Honoring Our Distinguished History and Creating Our Shared Future
For 244 years, men and women have taken an oath to support and defend our Constitution and our beloved country. The contribution of these unique individuals has made us the freedom-loving nation we are today and Marines’ Memorial Foundation exists to honor them and their families, today and every day.
In 1946, General A.A. Vandegrift, the Commandant of the US Marine Corps, had a vision to create a tribute dedicated to honoring the fallen of World War II. This led to the purchase of 609 Sutter Street in San Francisco, where a Living Memorial has honored the rich legacies of those who served and sacrificed for our country. This building was named the Marines’ Memorial Club, which at the time was only open to veterans of the US Marine Corps. Since then, throughout periods of peace and war, multiple generations of veterans from all services have enjoyed an atmosphere of patriotism and camaraderie. The Marines’ Memorial Foundation, a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit, was created in 2015 to help organization that fulfills the vision of General Vandegrift to honor the legacy of military service through three distinct paths of actions – Commemorating, Educating, and Serving. We Commemorate with the various historic displays and artifacts of the Living Memorial which are found throughout our building. These contribute to creating a true “Home Away From Home” for veterans, their families and our patriotic communities.
